What FormulaLock can and can't do
Can
- Mark locked cells with a yellow fill.
- Add Google's native warning-only protection, or a strict "only you" protected range.
- Put locked formulas and values back when a collaborator types or pastes over them in the Sheets interface, and log it.
- Lock every formula on a tab while input cells stay editable.
Can't
- Hide or encrypt anything. Anyone who can view the sheet can read and copy every formula.
- Stop someone with edit access from deleting the script (Extensions > Apps Script).
- Catch edits from imports, other scripts, add-ons or the Sheets API, or changes from sorting and moving ranges.
- Keep a lock running after rows or columns are inserted inside it: that lock pauses and tells you to unlock and lock again.
- Recognise every person's edits on personal Gmail accounts: Google only tells the script who is editing for the person who installed it (and for colleagues on the same Google Workspace domain). So lock cells from the account that installed the script, or your own later edits to them get put back too.
- Stop an editor from running Extensions > Apps Script. The FormulaLock menu only lets the person who locked cells unlock them, but the code itself is editable by any editor.
- Lock more than 5,000 cells in one lock, or unlimited locks per file (Google limits script storage).
